Like Grains Of Sand…..

A story in The Los Angeles Times reported today that scientists have created a Hyper-acurate atomic clock that won’t lose a second in 15 billion years.

In a related story, I lost 4.5 minutes that I’ll never get back reading that article.

Republican Sports Anyone?

The republican party is busy refining their process to select a new “Main Guy” (and what, do you think that a woman would have a chance with them?) for their 2016 presidential campaign, and in doing this they are going to try creating a sporting image for the party. It’s said that for obvious reasons this contest will be known as the “Low Hurdles”.

Don’t improve performance just lower the bar, it’s the republican way

Because many of their financial funders are said to be not fond of fishing analogies either, they decided to avoid the stigma that calling these candidates “Bottom Feeders” would generate.

California’s So Called Drought And Other Nonsense

Full disclosure, I’ve been a resident of Southern California since 1963 and as such I have watched how the basically unrestricted growth of the metropolitan areas has led them to flow together until there’s pretty much no undeveloped land remaining between them, just one contiguous pile of crap that is rapidly running out of room to expand. Also note that in the process of building these megaliths, the ground must be first rolled and pounded down flat, and then a fair portion of the lot it is covered by the structures themselves and layers of concrete or asphalt in the form of driveways and sidewalks, all of which thereby makes water permeation unlikely if not non existent. This means that any of the rare rainfall we do manage to get here often just flows down into the sewers and then out to the ocean instead of refilling those rapidly dwindling subterranean water tables.

Surf’s Up!!!

Just a few hours of driving along the 101 and 5 freeways will make it easy to see that there’s just one big megalopolis that extends between the North end of Ventura County to the Mexican border South of the city of San Diego. And, you wouldn’t be far off the mark to soon include the greater Santa Barbara area and points North and East to that pulsing growth that engulfs and devours (Thanks to Mel Brooks for that one) this part of the state.

So what I’m saying here is that there isn’t really an actual shortage of water, there’s simply a surplus of people, and the demand from the constant new arrivals and the yammering family that they bring with them. Think of the number of citizens who go on daily watering their lawns and how our culture enjoys keeping so many golf course expanses green, along with the occasional Koi pond and those overflowing well chlorinated swimming pools.

Give a developer an inch and they’ll build a mall

You should also remember that this once was and basically always will be a desert, an artificially enhanced desert if you will, that was never thought to be able to provide enough water to grow so many crops that are then exported away from the residents here. Do a Google search and you’ll be shocked to find out how much water is used to grow almonds and then figure out where that water comes from and who really pays for most of it. Here’s a hint, it’s not the growers or California almond consumers.

Dive on in, the waters… eh…. gone!

So, what is it that we are actually accomplishing by buying into those non-stop “the sky is falling” terror screeds? The word that pops into my mind is enabling, as in we’re enabling the speculators to take an inch and build a condo, by providing them with an enhanced supply of water that will be legally taken away from other Californians.
