Chappie . Want . Sub . Titles
I was one of those who got in line today to see the new film “Chappie”, and I was very impressed with the visual trickery that’s yet another jump above what director Neill (not a typo) Blomkamp (also not a typo) did on his excellent previous film “District 9”, with perfect CGI effects everywhere.
As for the audio, ummm…. not so much. In fact it must have been a toss up as to leave room for subtitles or get clean understandable sound, and the winner was, ummm…. some other movie. Recommendation for you? Bring a friend with you that can read lips (or who managed to find a copy of the script on the ‘net).
All things considered, I think I’d rather read Chappie’s lines than listen to what sounds like the winner of the Jar Jar Binks happy voice award competition.
There’s one Mad Max Mutant looking bad guy that got subtitles even though he was speaking nearly English, and because it was understandable for the most part and I was able to follow his dialogue, he stands out for that in this film more than for his evil looks.
I read in a review that the very talented Sharlto Copley was the actor who played the robot cop Chappie, which means that he was the one that did the green suit motion capture work to give the CGI folks an example of the mannerisms, excellent ones that I could also imagine Roberto Benigni doing, physical humor that’s seldom done this well.
Now, I’ll just need to find a theater that will screen this film in another language and then provide some back to English subtitles so I can follow the (not too complex, actually) plot.

Feel free to ignore any ads that are shown below this advisory, I don’t get to choose them and even more sadly, I don’t make a penny off any of them, so in the holy name of capitalism I rebuke and don’t endorse or support any of them, unless of course they’re made of funny stuff…..
P.S., check back for occasional updates and rewrites….
